George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron (22 January 1788 – 19 April 1824), commonly known simply as Lord Byron, was an English poet and a leading figure in the Romantic movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest British poets and remains widely read and influential.
This film deals with the life one of the most famous Philhellenes in history. After a reckless life full of parties in the aristocracy of England, the accumulation... of huge debts and wild love affairs with both sexes, he throws himself into the Greek war of independence with passion and is celebrated by the Greeks as a national hero.
He is determined to give his last performance in battle, inspired by the beauty and magic of the Greek myths. In the upheaval of the revolution, exhausted by a fever, the fantasy of Greek history and his love for the young Greek Louka, the poet’s fate unfolds towards his untimely death. The film won numerous awards at the Thessaloniki Film Festival 1992, among them Best Film, Best Photography, Best Cinematography.
Nikos Koundouros is a Greek film director, born in Agios Nikolaos, Crete in 1926. He studied painting and sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts, and was later exiled because of his political beliefs. At the age of 28 he decided to follow a career in cinematography. He started his career as a director of the film Magiki Polis (1954), where he combined his neorealism influences with his own artistic viewpoint. He found acceptance as a prominent artist in Greece and Europe, and acquired important awards in various international and Greek film festivals. His 1963 film Young Aphrodites won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 13th Berlin International Film Festival.
